Regular Report: Japanese Venture Funds Launched in 2011

Japan Venture Research Inc. (hereafter JVR, Akira Kitamura-CEO and Kohei Hayashi-CEO) conducted a survey on Japanese venture funds launched in 2011.

In 2011, a total of 22 funds were launched by venture capitals in Japan. The number of these Japanese venture funds, which had declined in recent years, has increased for two consecutive years and returned to the level in 2008. Yet, the amount of funds raised still stays at 60% of the level in 2008, and the average size per fund is declining. Boutique venture capitals investing small amounts in start-ups emerged in 2009, and, in 2011, the refocus on start-ups also spread to IT-focused CVCs and boutique VCs backed by IT firms. The increase in the number of funds focusing on IT start-ups was also a key trend in 2011, becoming a factor that constitutes small funds.
